How to Wash and Care for Plush Toys (Keep Them Fluffy for Years)
Share
A well-loved plush will survive juice spills, muddy adventures, and approximately one thousand hugs — if you care for it properly. Here's how to keep every squish in your collection fluffy for years.
First: check the label
Most quality plush toys are surface-washable. If there's a care tag, follow it. When in doubt, gentler is always better.
Surface washing (safest for most plushies)
Mix a drop of mild detergent in lukewarm water. Dampen a soft cloth, gently dab the dirty spots, then "rinse" with a clean damp cloth. Air-dry away from direct heat. This handles 90% of everyday grime.
Machine washing (for sturdy plushies)
Place the plush in a pillowcase or laundry bag, use a gentle/delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Skip the fabric softener — it can mat fluffy fibres over time.
Drying dos and don'ts
Air-drying is safest. If you tumble dry, use low heat with a couple of clean tennis balls — they bounce the plush back into shape and restore fluffiness. Never use high heat, which can melt synthetic fur.
The fluff revival trick
For a flattened favourite: gentle brushing with a soft-bristle brush, a few minutes in the dryer on low with tennis balls, and it'll look nearly new.
Storage smarts
Store plushies in breathable bags (not sealed plastic) in a cool, dry spot. For display pieces, a quick monthly dust with a lint roller keeps them fresh.
A little care goes a long way — treat them right and today's bedtime buddy becomes tomorrow's treasured keepsake.
